Netflix had its first official “fan event” as they are calling it. Tudum, appropriately named after the chime you hear after opening the Netflix app, is Netflix’s attempt of countering Disney+ day.
This event was massive. Netflix showed off teasers from new shows, clips from ongoing shows, and a lot more. Instead of watching the three-hour-long event, we’re here to tell you about everything exciting coming to Netflix in the upcoming year.
Red Notice, starring Dwayne Johnson, Ryan Reynolds, and Gal Gadot, is a headliner of sorts. Netflix is pushing this one, The Rock is really pushing this one, and it looks like it has a lot of potential. I’m a little bit nervous about this one. The Rock definitely has good movies, as well as the other two. But, the three of them also have a lot of clunkers. Based on the clip it looks good. But will it be good? I think so.
Stranger Things Season 4
Stranger Things fans get excited because the newest season is here soon. For those not following along, fans of the hit tv show have been waiting two years for this season. It’s been plagued with setback after setback. Definitely an exciting announcement for the loyalists. Admittedly, I’m not a fan of Stranger Things but I respect the show and I’m happy for the fans.
We got a look at the fourth, and final season of Ozark! I’m in between being a hardcore fan of Ozark and a softcore fan. Oddly enough, I think it’s perfect background noise. I always recommend people watch at least season 1 of Ozark all the way through before making a decision on the show.
Pronounced “Genius,” this is the most exciting announcement of all from Tudum. Jeen-yuhs is the highly anticipated Kanye West documentary that has been 20 years in the making. Kanye West stans like myself will know that this is something the community has been anxiously waiting for. I’m so glad Kanye shopped this out to Netflix. People love trashing on Netflix (even me) but if you have a documentary it pays to have it on the world’s most popular streaming service. I’m nervous that I’ll want more or that this should have been made into a 6 part docu-series. Regardless, I’m watching this the second it drops.
Bridgerton is back for season 2! I hate Bridgerton but for some reason, I watched it all and I will continue to watch all of season 2. Here’s something interesting to look out for with the second season. Regé-Jean Page, who played the male lead in Bridgerton, left the show. Ironically, he went over to the other Netflix show Emily in Paris. How the writers deal with this is beyond me. This is huge news for Bridgerton and I’m not sure where they are going to go with the season without him. We shall see.
This is going to be an interesting show. This is a new one to Netflix. The reason I think we need to pay attention to this is that it could be some competition for DC and Marvel. The show was originally written for DC. It’s curious that DC didn’t want it but Netflix did. Competition is always good for the consumer so I warmly welcome this show.
Tiger King is back!! What a throwback to the start of COVID. This show happened to land at the perfect time in history. I’m not sure it would have made the splash it did if everyone was out of lockdown. I’m very hesitant about this show. It’s hard to capture the charm of a first documentary. It’s going to be even harder when all the characters know they are international stars.
Don’t Look Up
This might be the most star-studded cast of any Netflix film yet. However, I’m nervous about Don’t Look Up. Leonardo DiCaprio looks amazing in this, Jonah Hill always does well next to Leo, and the entire cast has the same caliber. Buuuut, so far it looks average. I think Netflix is purposefully holding back. I also think that’s a genius move if that’s the case. I will absolutely watch this and I’m ignoring teasers from now until launch.
Some honorable mentions that I’m mildly excited for:
- Extraction 2 – Chris Hemsworth is back even though the ending of the frist Extraction movie doesn’t really make this possible. They’ll find a way.
- Vikings Valhalla – Vikings tearing it up? Yeah sounds lit to me, I’ll at least watch a few episodes.
- Emily in Paris – This is coming back for season 2. I never watched season 1, I don’t plan on watching season 1, but I know fans of the show will throw shade my way if I don’t mention it.
- The Crown – Another show I’ve never watched is coming back for a 5th season. Unlike Emily in Paris, I do want to watch The Crown.
- Army of Thieves – I’m conflicted. I want this to be good. But Army of the Dead was so bad that I have little hope.
- The Witcher – Season 2 is coming. I need to finish season 1 first. I like season 1 so far but I’m not rushing to finish it.
I know it seems like a lot but this is just the surface of Tudum day. There are some great shows and movies coming to Netflix along with some clunckers. All-in-all, it’s a great time to be a consumer of entertainment.
