Schmigadoon: Can Apple TV+ Be Stopped?

Apple TV+ takes a stab at musicals and does it better than most. A fun twist that pays homage to the classics from the 40s and 50s.

“Wait you’re telling me Lorne Michaels produced a musical TV show starring Cecily Strong and Keegan-Michael Key? And it’s one massive homage to all the great musicals from the 40s and 50s?”

Word for word, that was my reaction to hearing about Schmigadoon for the first time. It sounds like something that shouldn’t work. I thought the same thing about Ted Lasso and The Morning Show. Like those shows, I was wrong. I ended up finding this to be charming, light-hearted, and overall pretty funny. I was taken aback when I read certain articles (I’m looking at you, The Guardian) throwing shade towards Schmigadoon.

To me, it was all of the references to the musical classics that made me really enjoy this. Each song took elements from various musicals throughout history but with its own twist. On top of that, the story was strong too. Predictable? Sure. Fun? Definitely. You had characters like Carson, the brother (but actually son) of Emma, whose storyline helped move Josh’s (Keegan-Michael Key) character forward into someone who can embrace change. There are obviously bad guys, like Mildred (Kristin Chenoweth), good guys, and characters with strong internal conflicts.

The only thing I didn’t like was the ending. Call me crazy, but I think this specific show should take a page from the Netflix one-season only hit “Queens Gambit.” There’s no official word only a second season of Schmigadoon. However, the ending clearly set us up for a second season. Did they make it back into reality? Are they still stuck in Schmigadoon? We really don’t know and I wish they gave us an ending that wasn’t such a clear setup. I have faith that the writers and cast can pull off a second season. I don’t think we need a second season, though. It would have been better to give us something with less of a cliffhanger and more of a satisfying ending.
