Building Back Better Politics

After eleven months of fits and starts, President Joe Biden finally has the crown jewel of his Build Back Better plan in place. The infrastructure bill was supposed to be a bipartisan slam dunk, but it wasn’t? In this first episode of Political Perspectives, I break down the nearly year-long saga behind the legislation, why it got delayed, who is to blame, and who deserves credit for getting it passed. As I will do in all future episodes, I give both sides of the argument and let you decide who comes out on top.

However, the infrastructure bill highlights a bigger issue with our politics. While President Biden is all about his Build Back Better agenda, we need to build back a better brand of politics. The Republicans and Democrats who split from their party to support or oppose the legislation did so for very different reasons but the repercussions of those votes will be felt over the next year and may cost members on both sides of the aisle their re-election. I talk about what are the necessary steps to build back better politics so that bipartisan legislation can be heralded and not chastised.
