Beginning in 2022, The Win Place Show will feature regular interviews with figures from across the horse racing industry as a way of letting our listeners learn more about the different facets of the industry and certain things that regularly are out of the public eye. For the show’s first interview of 2022, I am thrilled to welcome Kathryn Papp DVM, an equine veterinarian who works at Hillcrest Meadow Equine. In that role, she works with horses in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Florida. Dr. Papp provides specialized care to the Thoroughbred Racing industry and Sporthorses in Hunters, Jumpers, Eventing, and Dressage. Dr. Papp, grew up in the horse world, showing on the top circuits with some of the best trainers in the business. She has extensive knowledge, experience, and expertise in lameness and common Racing injuries. Her dedicated lifestyle keeps her current on the latest treatments, surgeries, and therapies. She is also the co-founder of the Pennsylvania Racehorse Rehoming, Rehabilitation, and Rescue organization, which is a non-profit helping injured, unwanted, and retired racehorses. In today’s interview, we delve into several timely and critical topics, including the recent death of Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit. His death sent shockwaves through the horse racing community and ignited calls for reform, however, as our conversation shows, the potential causes for his passing are quite varied and we will not have a clear-cut understanding of the factors that led to his death of months. Additionally, we discuss how the sport of horse racing can better regulate themselves and understanding the various therapeutic means used to improve horse health and welfare. So, sit back, relax, and enjoy my interview with Dr. Kathryn Papp.
